The Gospel

 (Video Created by Southern Baptist Theological Seminary)

1. Everyone sins, and rebels against God

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Psalm 14:2-3 The Lord looks down from heaven
     on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
     any who seek God.

All have turned away, all have become corrupt;
     there is no one who does good,
     not even one.

2. So everyone deserves to be punished by God in hell

Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death.

Matthew 25:41-46 Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.

3. We can’t do anything good enough to make up for our sins

Isaiah 64:6 All of us have become like one who is unclean,
     and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
        we all shrivel up like a leaf,
     and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Romans 3:20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

4. But God loved us, so He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for us, taking the punishment we deserved

 Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

 1 Peter 2:22-24  “He [Jesus] committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

5.  Jesus rose from the dead showing he had beaten sin and His sacrifice was accepted by God

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures

 Matthew 28:5-7 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.  He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.  Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”

6.  So if we believe that Jesus paid for our sins and we follow Him as our Lord, turning away from sin, then we are given the free gift of eternal life, we are forgiven for our sins, and we are made part of God’s family.

 Romans 10:9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

 John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

 Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

 Mark 1:14-15 Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent  and believe in the gospel.”  [repent means to turn away from your sin and live for God]

Galatians 3:26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith
